Group Activities for Senior Citizens – You Deserve to Have Fun
Firstly I would like to refer you to an article on Wikipedia about senior years / old age
It doesn’t specifically cover this topic however is an interesting article to read.
This article Group Activities for Senior Citizens – You Deserve to Have Fun will show you some very interesting ideas for you and your friends or groups you may be able to join in your locality whether it be at home or in a community center.
The majority of Retirement Communities have group activities already in place so it is simply a matter of going along and joining in.
You will receive a hearty welcome and enjoy yourself immensely.
If you are still living at home you can get a group of friends together and organize some activities you all enjoy.
It may be something as simple as a weekly game of scrabble and morning or afternoon tea.
I am sure that if this is not suitable for you local community centers will have group activities.
It may be a matter of a phone call to contact them to find out what is available.
Just remember Groups do not have to be large for you to enjoy the activities.
Why Participate in Group Activities
It is most important to socialize as much as possible in your senior years.
The reasons for this are to stimulate your brain and cognitive health. You will also experience a general improvement in your overall health.
Being an active walker the first group I would join is a walking group.
Being a member of this type of group you will be safe while walking as there are other people with you if you should experience difficulties.
They are a tremendous place to meet new friends and have good conversations.
Other exercise groups for seniors include
- Swimming Group – Could be a masters group of swimmers
- Pilates Group
- Yoga Group
- Chair Exercise Group
- Chair Yoga Group
- Tai Chi Group
- Balance Group
- Cycling Group
These are all excellent groups to join as your overall health will improve and you will be able to socialize more with others.
You would also be able to join Groups that exercise at your local Gym.
Groups that socialize are great to join.
I am in some that aren’t even formal groups.
We just sit around talking for hours and the numbers can vary anywhere from 2 to 6.
Most of us talk a load of old rubbish and everyone has a good laugh.
None of us can really remember what was talked about anyway.
The following day the topics of conversation will be similar.
The members of this group have ages from 67 to 89.
Occasionally we will meet ant one unit or another for coffee and nibblies.
You can organize social groups with your friends to:
- Meet for Coffee
- Go to a Restaurant
- Visit a Gym
- Go to the Movies
- Go to a Theater
- Visit a Museum
- Visit a nearby Community
- Go on an Outing
The above are just a few ideas to get you thinking of shared interests with your friends.
I am sure you will come up with many more.
Hobbies and Games
I know that our retirement community has many activities including
- Contract Bridge
- Five Hundred
- Gem Cutting
- Art Group
- Craft Group
- Singing Group
- Lawn Bowls
- Aqua Aerobics
- Tai Chi
- Indoor Bowls
- Table Tennis
- Social Bridge
There are many group activities in the above list that you would possibly be able to arrange between your friends.
Many seniors have enjoyed gardening for many years.
Getting out into the fresh air and creating a pleasant lawn and gardens at their home.
Feeling that sense of accomplishment.
Why not do it with a group of like minded people.
This kind of a group I am sure would spend many an hour discussing different flowers and vegetables to plant in what season it happened to be.
I can imagine this would be a very social group to join.
Whatever craft or sewing you are interested in I am sure there will be a group you can find to cater for your interests.
My sister ,for example, goes to pottery classes. She has been going there for years and I am sure it is not just to learn pottery but I know she has a lot of interactions with other members of the class.
She has been able to make quite a few new friends there also.
My sister is in her mid 70’s.
I guess that Ceramic Classes would be similar.
My late wife loved Scrapbooking and making Cards.
I still have a lot of her scrapbooking projects on the wall of my unit.
Many of the Cards she made she turned into a very small money maker by supplying only 1 shop.
It was enough for a small amount of pocket money and paid for the card she was using.
I do realize that Scrapbooking is a huge industry so if it is something you enjoy why not join a group in your local area.
Sewing and Knitting – Surely there must be groups you can join for these activities.
I would imagine by joining a group associated with this activity you would be able to swap patterns and get advice from other members.
Crochet – Similar to above.
There are so many crafts we cannot cover them all in this article however some other crafts include:
- Paper Crafts
- String Art
These are only a few more I am sure you can find and name many more.
Reading Groups and Book Clubs
Reading and Book Clubs are popular.
This could be where a group of people get together and take roles in reading a book or all members read the same book and then get together to discuss the contents of that book over a coffee.
Ameuter Theater Groups
Do you have hidden talents waiting to show themselves.
Join an Ameuter Theater Group.
If you are not necessarily interested in acting there will be many other areas you can be used.
Making scenery for example or changing scenes during a rehearsal or performance.
Sewing and mending costumes.
I would imagine someone would have to look after the finances of the group. If you are a retired Accountant or Bookkeeper this would suit you.
Looking to learn something new.
There are plenty of groups for you to join.
If you need to brush up on your computer skills why not go to a computer class. Here there are all similar people to yourself more than likely having difficulties with the changing technologies in this area.
Do a photography course.
I personally bought a new camera a few years ago.
All my previous cameras needed film to work.
I was now confronted with a digital camera.
For a few months I asked my children how to get the film out of it and put new film in.
Also where I had to take it to be developed.
They tired of this and suggested I do a course.
It was something that I enjoyed especially when we went on field trips.
There are many other courses you can do you just have to look around to find them.
Thank you for reading this article.
I trust by now you have some ideas of things you can do that will get you out and about and enjoy the social part of joining a group.
