As you may be aware I am almost 70 years of age and live in a retirement community and as such fully understand many of the problems faced by senior citizens.
Loneliness and Socializing
I believe that loneliness and socializing is one of the main problems that many aging citizens face today.
Let me tell you a lovely experience I had that was not expected.
A lovely lady was walking, in the village, outside my unit one bright and sunny afternoon at about 3.00p.m.
After talking with her for about 10 minutes I invited her in for a cup of coffee.
Unfortunately, she had to decline but said it sounded like a good idea and that she would come back in a few days time.
After waiting for a fortnight I had all but given up on her thinking she may be suffering dementia.
The next day there was a knock on the door and there she stood.
She had called the previous week but I was out.
What Happened Next
She came in and I made a cup of coffee for both of us.
We talked and laughed for over 2 hours.
When she was leaving she suggested that I come to her place for coffee.
I asked her when and she said 10 a.m. the next day.
Another 2 hours of talk and laughing.
One thing led to another and we found that we were very compatible.
Neither of us was looking for a relationship but it started and following many hours of conversations we both realized we were very lonely people, especially at night while watching television.
We have since been on a cruise together, accompanied each other on bus trips as well as many outings to shopping malls for a meal or just a coffee.
We found out that we had lost our spouses within about 3 months of each other and since meeting have met all the other’s children and grandchildren and have no problems in this area.
We won’t marry simply because it causes too many problems for our children after we pass away.
Having a constant companion to share conversations with as well as watch Television with has meant so much to both of us and taken away that loneliness.
Unfortunately, younger members of our families lead busy lives and can’t visit as much as we, or they, would like.
Although we only see each other for on average 3 hours a day this has made so much difference we cannot believe it.
As for socializing having this lady by my side we often enjoy the company of others in the restaurant at the retirement community.
At other times, on a daily occurrence, I go to collect my mail, only about 30 seconds away from my unit and sometimes get back 3 hours later as I run into other residents who enjoy a chat.
This chat can sometimes be the same as the previous day as we forget what we have discussed previously.
It doesn’t matter. We are all out in the fresh air enjoying each other’s company.
Most of the time a good deal of laughter occurs.
It is important to socialize as much as possible so that you remain to have a positive outlook on life.
This can also stop you from getting depressed.
To socialize as much as possible keep in touch with friends and other family members as much as you can.
I have also read that socializing can defer the onset of Alzheimer’s as well as Dementia.
I admit I am not or have ever had any training in medicine.
Senior Mobility Problems
Due to my history, as well as what I have witnessed Seniors do definitely have mobility problems.
This doesn’t affect all seniors but due to the aging process
From my point of view up until 5 months ago, I was walking 3.5 Kilometers to 4 Kilometers daily. Now I can barely make 100 meters.
My problem is health-related and in particular cardiac problems.
This has forced me to go to the next level of transport which is a mobility scooter, which I took delivery of 2 days ago.
If you do get a mobility scooter to make sure you have had complete and thorough training on how to use it.
You should also discuss with your loved ones the necessary insurance to take out.
I did not realize I was not covered if I drove into a vehicle or through a plate glass window.
Previously I used walking sticks, which I now use inside the unit, and from there to a rollator.
I believe that this is a problem that is caused by all sorts of systems gradually breaking down inside our body.
Many seniors over their lifetime have suffered physical injuries which can cause problems with mobility.
These injuries may be because of accidents or sport’s related.
Check with your doctor what can be done to help you.
A Balance Problem is another problem that I am suffering from.
My Physiotherapist had me starting on a range of exercises to help with this.
At the same time, my walking decreased I was unable to carry on with these exercises so now I use my walking stick around the inside of my unit.
From what many of my friends tell me they also are affected by balance issues.
Unfortunately, balance issues can be a contributor to falls and unsteadiness when walking and exercising.
I guess, this is why, in the community where I live, there are exercise classes done while sitting on a chair.
Balance issues can be caused by a few different conditions.
Firstly, if you have an inner ear infection, this can be a cause.
One of the major causes can be related to arthritis.
Senior Citizens Problem Gambling
I know a few senior citizens who face the problem of gambling.
For a detailed study of this problem we refer you to
A lot of recently retired people who may have been gamblers while working now have much more time to enjoy this habit.
There are more venues that they now have the time to travel to so that they can indulge in other forms of gambling.
Health Problems faced by Seniors
I will once again reiterate that I have no formal medical training.
A lot of problems in the US are due to costs associated with medical treatments and prescriptions.
23 percent of US seniors reported in this article that they did not fill prescriptions etc.
The article also points out that 43% of seniors are classified as high care.
These statistics are alarming to me and I guess also to you.
So what are some of the major health problems we face?
I will not attempt to cover this complex issue in detail except to list some of the major health problems.
I do hope that you can understand why I am not going into greater detail but I am sure you will know someone who is a sufferer or may suffer some of these yourself.
- Heart Problems
- Lung Disease
- Eating Disorders
- Bipolar Disease
Recognize some of these? I bet you do.
I lost my wife to cancer about 2 years ago and some of these I now suffer.
We haven’t even mentioned hearing loss or damage to our eyes which necessitates glasses.
Another is tooth decay which may mean wearing dentures.
If you need to know more about health care we refer you to this article on Wikipedia.
